Our firm handles clients from all walks of life, but we tend to specialize to some degree. Our firm serves the small-business-owner segment, and I have also developed many relationships with the physicians in our area and beyond.

By and large, they are owners of their practices and, in the final analysis, have bottom-line responsibility. Their personal financial picture is closely tied to their practice, and, together, they offer planning considerations that might not be found in other segments. We are well-equipped to handle those. In addition to our own firm’s expertise, we have access to a network of attorneys, accountants, and other financial specialists throughout the country, should the need arise.

I find this to be an attractive audience, based on their attitudes toward our profession. They understand from their own experience that it makes sense to seek professional relationships with individuals who offer specialized expertise; they see the same benefit to coming to our firm for financial and retirement planning. We really shine when there’s a retirement coming up, a practice is being transitioned, or there is an opportunity for consulting on a practice’s 401(k) plan structure. The physician audience is also receptive to our message around managed investment accounts—they appreciate that we seek out third-party money managers who are highly competent at what they do.

It is also just a great group of people—highly dedicated and service-oriented. We relate well on many levels and have many shared values. Through owning their practices, they see the benefits of controlling their own destinies, and that makes them very open to the sophisticated strategies we offer. This area of my business continues to grow, and I feel honored to have been named to Medical Economics’ listing of “Best Financial Advisors for Doctors” from 2012 to 2015.
