Active investment management’s weekly magazine for fee-based advisors

In my experience, referrals always flow up, meaning the small client who feels they received great value from the transaction seeks to balance that out by referring you to someone who might have a more significant net worth.

I was once approached by a group of private school employees who all had very small 403(b) accounts and were going to be dropped by their previous company. I needed to hustle but was able to put a plan together and secure a custodian between Christmas and New Year’s. Suffice to say, they were very satisfied and ultimately provided referrals to members of their board with substantial assets. This was a win-win for everyone.

So, I have learned that if you want to generate some valuable referral trees, start at the roots. You’ll get to the fruit pretty quickly.
