One of my growing areas of emphasis is the corporate 401(k) marketplace.

I work through third-party administrators on compliant and user-friendly plan designs. I take a fully-integrated 401(k) approach, involving the third-party administrator, the plan sponsor, plan participants, fiduciary relationships with money-management firms, and me.

It is critical to develop strong relationships with centers of influence as a source of referrals. These can be third-party administrators, attorneys, CPAs, payroll providers, and others. No matter where the introduction may come from, I try to provide the center of influence with a customized and solution-oriented 401(k) approach that demonstrates that they are adding value to their client relationship—not something off the shelf.

My prime goal is to establish that first meeting with the plan sponsor. I will usually conduct an impartial benchmarking analysis that will allow the plan sponsor to evaluate their current plan’s strengths and weaknesses. This represents a service to the referrer and the plan sponsor, as well as being a very effective marketing tool.
