One of the single most important things is making sure that a leadership team plays to its strengths—with the right people doing the right things. Mine are in analytics, and portfolio strategy and construction, in addition to my 30-plus years of client experience. My husband, Dean, has expertise in marketing and business development. We also have talented trainers for reps new to our firm. And David Morton, of AdvisorGuide, has done a terrific job on our investment committee, working with me since 2003 on active management strategies.
The trick is to leverage these and other individual strengths in a collaborative fashion. We believe in what you might call the “wisdom of teams,” meaning that the financial industry primarily supports individual producers building small practices. Instead, we leverage the wisdom of the team into a business enterprise and then partner with third-party firms to generate growth. Everything we do has a large-numbers mind-set so that we can simplify to multiply our business systems and growth.
